Ten Guidelines

Added March Madness 22, 2008

Hello. We continue to be very busy as three of our children will soon be in college. All foru of our children are at home now (returned from church missions), when fall comes, two will leave the nest to out of town colleges. We are in hog heaven right now with all our children home.

Earlier this year, I developed ten guidelines for better health and well being. The guidelines offer a holistic approach for healing and being well. A wide range of topics are covered including toxins, water, nutritional supplements, exercise and financial wellbeing. Of course we cover emotional concerns. I hope you will enjoy these guidelines. They come with all kinds of links to check out. Please let me know what you think of them. To view the first one, just follow this link. I also hope you get to enjoy your children as much as I get to enjoy ours.

Pure Water

Added August 13, 2007

Well, I guess I am writing less and less on this page. However, that does not stop us from being busy. Now we are getting into the water business. We are concerned that good health includes good drinking water. Few people want to drink water from their tap. They will spend all kinds of money on bottled water. Most bottled waters are fine. They are just expensive and come in plastic containers.

We feel it is important to avoid the plastic containers. One way to do that and save money at the same time is to have your own reverse osmosis water filter in your own home. Over time you will save lots of money. We can offer a complete five stage reverse osmosis system for only $179.00. Check out all our deals at www.yourfamilyclinic.com/water/iwater.html.

We are never too busy to improve your health and your well being. Hope you are having a great summer.

Autism in the School-Age Child

Added November 22, 2006

We hope you and your family are having a great Thanksgiving! We have much to be thankful for. The world abounds with opportunities and solutions for all types of problems. Even though there is much strife in the world today, there seems to be many good people willing to help each other.

Two such people wrote a great book about school aged children with Autism and related disorders. If you have a child with Autism, we suggest that you check this book out. It is called Autism in the School-Aged Child: Expanding Behavioral Strategies and Promoting Success by Carol Schmidt, RN, BSN and Beth Heybyrne, MA, Autism Family Press, 2004, ISBN 0-9674969-3-4. While we advocate a holistic approach to the treatment of Autism, behavioral strategies offer many sound techniques that will help any child with symptoms of Autism. They often serve as a foundation to treatment when applied at the proper timing. This book describes many great techniques to improve attention, success in school, sibling relationships and many other areas of home and school life. The authors explain ABA in terms that most parents can understand. We hope you enjoy the book as much as we did.

We are also thankful to the hundreds maybe thousands of people who have supported Your Family Clinic in a variety of ways. Thank you for reading this. Thank you for all that you do to make life a little better for others in this world.

Stress Free ADHD

Added January 23, 2006

Wow, the time is getting longer and longer that I contribute to this What’s New section. We are still going strong and are always expanding. It is now the middle of winter and we survived Hurricane Katrina. We are still making repairs on our home though.

I came across a product (or the product came across me) designed to help parents with their children who have ADHD symptoms. It is probably the best and most complete traditional treatment of ADHD that we have come across. I feel many will enjoy the videos and charts included in this kit.

I must warn you that we do get a kick back on this product. It’s not much of a kick back, but it is still there none-the-less. So if you are interested, just click on the following advertisement.

For Teachers: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Added June 25, 2005

What a great summer’s day! Our family went to a water park in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and we had a blast! I had to come home early because one child is working at a fast food restaurant. We had a nice trip back home.

Summer is usually not the time to worry about Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, however it is a great time for teachers to prepare for the upcoming school year. A great book to help handle discipline problems is How to Turn Any Disruptive Child Into Your Best Student: The ADHD Solution for Teachers by Tom Daly. The author has some great advice and practical strategies. Every teacher of grade school or high school children should read this book (our humble opinion).

We feel that professionals who work with teachers should read this book too. It is easy to read and full of effective solutions for common problems that occur in the classroom. Parents can also benefit from this book so they can work together with the teacher in managing problematic behaviors. We feel the book delivers what its title says. You can find this book at www.adhdsolution.com

So if you can stay away from the theme parks long enough to read something this summer, we recommend this book to you. If you don’t feel like staying away from the theme parks, we hope you have a blast like we did today!

Autism

Added April 28, 2005

Life is still wonderful but very busy. We hope you are enjoying a fabulous Spring and are able to keep up with everything. For parents of children with Autism, life can be a little bit more challenging. Fortunately there are many new interventions that can make life a lot easier. Now it is possible for some children with Autism and related disorders to be completely symptom free within a year or so of treatment. A recent study on Relationship Development Intervention was able to achieve these results!

Find out more information from our new section on Autism! For more information, just click here. We will be happy to offer special services or resources to help you improve the quality of life for your loved one that suffers from symptoms related to Autism. Remember, any advancement in cognitive functioning improves the quality of life for the individual for the rest of their life. Improving the quality of life is one of the purposes for Your Family Clinic. We hope you find a more abundant life and share it with others.

Psychiatric Medications

Added January 13, 2005

We hope you are having a great new year. Our oldest son, now 19 years old, is on a church mission to Brazil. He will be in Brazil for two years. We will miss him much. He sent his first E-mail today! He is excited about being in Brazil.

We noticed that our medical portion of the website is very sparse. To add something to that section, I added a list of psychiatric medications commonly used to treat mental illness. I will try to keep that list updated. The list was useful in the graduate class I was teaching. We hope someone can get some use out of it. To view the list, just click here.

We hope you have many great and wonderful things happen to you this year. May 2005 be great for you and your family.

Anger Management

Added October 23, 2004

We are managing the stage in our life when our oldest is leaving the nest. He has been working in Indianapolis, living with his grandfather, saving money for his mission. He leaves on his mission for two years in Brazil. We are all excited! He will be able to learn so much about the world as he serves others.

Do you know people who are hot headed? Inappropriate expression of anger does more harm than good. To be angry is not bad, it is what you do with your anger that makes it good or bad. Effective anger management techniques can be learned at several web sites. One that we like that uses the principles of Energy Tapping or Field Though Therapy can be found by clicking here.We hope you enjoy it.

Links to Learning Disorder Treatment Sites

Added September 16, 2004

We survived last night’s hurricane! Mississippi got off easy. Alabama and Florida have been hard hit. Our prayers go out to all those who have been negatively effected by the monstrous winds and rains of the hurricane.

The bad weather did have a silver lining for us. We got to spend the whole time with our family. While with the family, I did take a little time out to post a list I had been working on. It is a partial list of the various modules who use a neuro-developmental approach in treating learning disorders. We believe there is a new paradigm shift in the treatment of learning disorders and this paradigm shift include using neuro-developmental models. We hope these model takes the education community by storm. Much more can be done to help children with learning disorders. We wish these models were implemented within the school environment. Unfortunately, most of them are not included within special education. These models suggest that learning disorders do not have to be a life sentence. Some have turn around times as short as three months!

Come check out the web sites by clicking here. You may get blown away by what you learn. If you know of any other Internet sites that you feel should be included in this list, please let us know. We will include them.

Holistic Psychology

Added August 18, 2004

Summer is over and school is upon us! We spent much time on vacation this year. We went to Tennessee and Indiana. We had much fun. Our oldest son left the nest for a while to spend time with his grandfather in Indianapolis.

After all these years of representing applied Holistic Psychology, we finally have added a thesis article explaining what Holistic Psychology is about. We hope you like it. To view the article, just click here.

We hope you have had a wonderful summer as well. We look forward to the rest of 2004. We are planning another little vacation to Florida soon.

The Whisper Phone

Added July 5, 2004

Greetings to all from Your Family Clinic. Life seems to get busier and busier. Our children seem to grow up too fast. It is time for us to slow down a little and tell you about a neat tool for children struggling with phonics or learning to read. It is called the Whisper Phone or Phonics Phone.

The Phonics Phone is a little device made from plastic or pvc pipe. It allows the child to really hear the words they are attempting to pronounce. Children struggling to read and children just learning to read may benefit greatly from this little devise. While it would be easy to make it yourself, the Candl Foundation distributes polished Whisper Phones at a very reasonable price. If you order one at a time the cost is $2.50 plus $5.00 shipping and handling. Order many of them and the price is reduced to about $2.00 per phone. If you are a teacher, you might consider ordering one for each student learning to read. For more information, we encourage you to visit their web site at www.phonicsphone.org.

22 point raise in IQ

Added February 17, 2004

We do not know how we have missed this, but we finally came across it. Better late than never. For years we have been telling people that Dr. Jerry Winger in Seattle Washington was able to get his special education students to improve their IQ an average of 23 points. This is remarkable and unheard of until now. Since 1995 the PACE program have been averaging IQ raises of 22 points. They do it in a twelve week program. They have research to support their claims. We congratulate them!

Their program is designed for children who are struggling in school. They work on memory, comprehension and sensory integration. They are able to help develop attention skills in students. The only drawback we see is the price. It is expensive intervention, but not as expensive as a year of tutoring. It is tons more effective than tutoring. For more information, feel free to click here.

New Treatment for Dyslexia

Added December 22, 2003

We hope everyone is having a great Christmas season. We sure are!

Dore Centers have a new treatment for dyslexia. We are excited about this because their techniques are designed to develop the cerebellum of the brain to improve reading. Many recent scientific studies suggest that the cerebellum is important for visual motor skills and reading. Dore Center’s treatment offers a major advancement for the treatment of dyslexia. They have a research study that suggests it is effective. We say: way to go!

Our only wish is that they would be more open about the way they do their exercises. I guess they need to keep it under wrap so they can make some money on their techniques. If you would like more information, just click here. In the meantime,... we wish you all a Merry Christmas!

Help for the Hopeless Child

Added October 18, 2003

The weather is cooling off in our part of the country. Today is a cloudy day. I feel a warm ray of sunshine when I think of Dr. Ronald Federici’s book: Help for the Hopeless Child. This book is a gold mind! It explains his methods of dealing with children who are viewed as beyond help. His technique involves much time and commitment, but not much money. It is much less expensive than a hospital stay and for the hopeless child, and much more effective. A must read for parents of children who have been hospitalized repeatedly.

In addition, the book offers many resources for parents with children who are very difficult to parent. He explains that other therapy techniques should be tried before attempting his treatment approach. But, when other treatment techniques fail, his model is a viable resource.

We feel his treatment methods are sound and scientifically based. NBC's Dateline news program showed his treatment methods on a child who was severely neglected before his adoption. Dr. Federici’s methods worked when many had failed. The program is not a double blind controlled study for proof of the effectiveness of his methods, but it certainly offers much hope for families clouded by disappointment following disappointment when treating difficult children. We hope you will enjoy the book. For more information on how to order this book, click here.

Changes to our Holistic Treatment article on ADHD

Added September 13, 2003

School has started and everyone appears to be adjusting to the rigors of study and learning! Our children received their progress reports yesterday. Fortunately, everything was good news. We our proud of our four children. The oldest is a senior in High School.

To help others who are dealing with symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), we have updated our article on a Holistic approach to treating symptoms of ADHD. We have included updates in the treatment field. We hope you will check it out by clicking here.

If you can, join us at our Workshop!

Added August 29, 2003

We are doing it again! We enjoyed the workshop in Picayune so much that are doing it in Wiggins. It will be the some workshop. We will present some techniques we have developed over the years, but mainly the focus of the workshop will be on techniques developed by Dr. Stein. He used behavioral techniques to get a 90 + percent improvement on all Attention Deficit Symptoms within a three week period. If the child does not generalize the appropriate behaviors to the school setting, there are behavioral methods to get these behaviors to generalize. This is fantastic news! The procedures do not involve using medications nor supplements.

If you live near us in Mississippi and wish to attend the workshop, click here to register. Let us know if you would like us to present a workshop to a parent group in your area by sending us an E-mail. If you can not come to the workshop, you can still get the information by reading the information below.

If you can, join us at our Workshop!

Added August 2, 2003

This is the most rain I have seen since we moved to Mississippi. Usually we have drought conditions during the summer, but not this year. It is raining as I type. The grass is pretty and green though.

On August 23, 2003, we will be at The Senior Center in Picyune, MS. If you can make it, come and join us! We are excited about this workshop.

Think about it. What medicine can do in one day for children with ADHD symptoms, behavior modification can now do in three weeks, but no negative side effects! Once the three weeks are up, you do not have to continue paying for medication. We feel everyone should try these techniques before considering putting their child on medication.

If you live near us in Mississippi and wish to attend the workshop, click here to register. Let us know if you would like us to present a workshop to a parent group in your area by sending us an E-mail. If you can not come to the workshop, you can still get the information by reading the information below.

The rain has subsided. Rain is good for Mississippi.

Ritalin is Not the Answer: A Drug-Free, Practical Program for Chidlren Diagnosed with ADD or ADHD

Added July 12, 2003

This summer has been a productive time for us. We are adding more and more information to Your Family Clinic. One piece of information that we are excited about is Dr. David B. Stein’s book: Ritalin is not the Answer. It took us too long to stumble onto this book. It was published in 1999. It is a cognitive behavioral approach to treating children diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. It does not recommend herbs or supplements of any kind. It advocates effective parenting.

I like Dr. Stein’s parenting techniques because I can see how they change the child’s neurological connections. His techniques help children learn to think about the consequences to their behaviors. His method of time out teaches children how to sit still. It is a great program and we encourage everyone with an ADHD child between the ages of 3 to 12 to try Dr. Stein’s techniques first! It could save you much money and lots of wasted time. It should also build your child’s self esteem and create more peace and harmony at home. To order the book, click here. If you would like training in this technique or related techniques please contact us by clicking here Please put training into the subject line. If you have a very difficult child and need help, check out our home based services by clicking here. We hope you are having a productive summer as well. Getting this book now should help an ADHD child have a very productive school year and get the teacher off your back as well. Let us know how it goes!

Nutritional Recommendations for Depression

Added July 4, 2003

Our family witnessed a great firework display last night. Seems like the firework companies make better and better fireworks each year. I love the ones with the orange tails that seem to finger out across the night sky.

We are getting better at updating the web site. We now have nutritional recommendations from Dr. Ray Sahelian’s book Mind Boosters: A guide to natural supplements that enhance your mind, memory and mood. To check out his recommendations, just click here. To view nutritional recommendations for other disorders, click here. We will post more of his recommendations in the weeks that follow. We hope you are getting a bang out of summer!

Your Personal Guide to Holistic Services

Added June 28, 2003

Soon it will be the Fourth of July! It is the time we celebrate America’s Independence Day and show our patriotism. We have another reason to celebrate! We have added a new service.

We are excited about this new service. We offer to be your personal guide in applying Holistic Psychology to the treatment of emotional and mental disorders. There are so many healing arts to choose from. We feel we have a good grasp of what is currently available and which ones are appropriate to treat specific disorders.

One limitation to this service is that it is relatively expensive. We make house calls! We will come and spend time making up a treatment plan that is right for you. We will explain what you can expect from our services and the professionals in your State that we work with. We will also tell you what we feel we can not do. Such personal service is costly. We suspect that while it is expensive in the short run, it will be very cost effective in the long run. If you are interested in this service, please follow the link to: Your Guide to Holistic Psychology. We hope that you are enjoying the summer and will have a happy and safe July 4th.

New Software to help overcome ADHD Sypmtoms

Added May 24, 2003

It has been too long since we have posted anything to this web page. Sorry about that. We are still alive and well. Now that the class I taught at the University has finished, I will have more time to do other things that I enjoy. We hope you have had a fun and rewarding winter.

Speaking about doing enjoyable things, Brain Train has developed their software even further. Their new cognitive software is very enjoyable and easy to use. My initial concerns with their software has been that it is very expensive. There existed other software that was less expensive and looked better on the screen. Not anymore, this new software looks great. Our young clients really like this software and ask to play it again and again.

Most children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder that we have worked with enjoy doing these cognitive exercises. As they are challenged through the software, they are developing greater skills in visual motor abilities, reducing impulsivity, and increasing attention.

The software is now more affordable through their new leasing program. Parents can lease the program over a six month time period. (If leased with one payment the cost is $200.00) If a parent and a child work hard at the software, most children should be able to finish in about four months. The next step would be to test the child on the IVA or TOVA or similar CPT to see if the training really did improve attention skills. Research suggests that this type of activity does improve attention skills. Brain Train also reports research on how this software can be helpful to children with Autism and adults with Schizophrenia.

This is very impressive to us. Check it out for yourself by clicking here. We hope that you are having a super spring and summer!

Free Teen Group Activities

Added February 7, 2003

We hope your holidays were as fun as ours! Looks like it has been a while since updating the website. We were really having fun! I have a new digital camera and that has been distracting. With our fun we came accross a great manual for group therapy with adolescents. It's called: No Matter What the Consequences: A guide to Help Teens Recognize and understand Addiction. Check it out by clicking here, click to view programs and then download the guide from the Internet!

There is a free workbook for the treatment and prevention of drug abuse among adolescents. It is well done and a great resource. It’s a treatment manual than any therapist or program can afford. Don’t we live in a marvelous age?
