Good News for Learning Disorders!

Science has advanced to the point that there is new hope for children and adults with learning disorders. Contrary to traditional myths that intelligence is relatively unchangeable. The truth is intelligence does change. It can change for the better or for the worse.

It is true that with aging, some parts of intelligence, particularly memory, worsens as the years role by. However, with proper intervention, memory loses can be regained. In addition, other areas of intelligence can be developed through a process we call remediation.

Remediation is simply taking a person's cognitive deficit (e.g., memory) and getting the person to practice exercises (e.g., paper and pencil modules) that develop the brain (stimulate the brain to grow more dendrites or nerve branches). As the brain develops, the person's deficit becomes normal or above normal. In short, with remediation a mental weakness can be turned into a strength. A person with poor memory can have better memory than most people through remediation.

If you or your child have poor grades or poor work performance, you may wish to consider remediation services. Remediation is very different than tutoring. Tutoring teaches subjects that are presented in school. Often children who can not read receive tutoring for years and years with limited progress. The problem is that the child does not possess the cognitive skills needed to be able to read. Remediation helps the brain develop so that the necessary skills can be obtained. Once the child has developed the areas of the brain related to the particular skill he/she is lacking, tutoring will then be effective.

The first step in over coming learning problems is to obtain a complete assessment. This should include sensory (e.g., vision, balance, auditory processes) testing as well as cognitive skills evaluation. Traditional methods of testing (e.g., I.Q. test paired with an achievement test) are inadequate. These methods tell whether a child has a learning disorder or not, but the results are not specific enough for effective remediation. A better method involves the Structure of Intellect testing combined with sensory testing.

The second step involves remediation. Only the areas of the brain that relate to the individual's weaknesses will need to be remediated. The testing can let you know about how long the remediation process will take. For common learning disorders, significant progress can be achieved in three months of consistent work. Remediation is not a quick fix, but the effects are long lasting. SOI remediation techniques are backed by years of research and development. Many schools and learning centers through out the country are currently using these techniques.
