On Line Journal for Trauma

Added August 21, 1999

At work we hired a new therapist who graduated from a school in Florida. She is certified in Traumatology (the study of trauma). I have never heard of it before. While I have level two training in EMDR, and training in Critical Incident Stress Management, I have never heard of Traumatology or a certification in it. Sure enough I read through her certificate and other information and there was a web page: Trauma Journal . This site is great for professionals! It has journal articles about EMDR, Field Thought Therapy, CISM and other techniques. I am printing out one article now. Let us know what you think!

Why Kids Kill

Added August 12, 1999

I recently attended the Mississippi Juvenile Justice Conference where speaker Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman presented a compelling case for why kids kill. Grossman's Book "On Killing" was a Pulitzer prize nominee and details the psychology of teaching soldiers to kill. He is a retired Marine Ranger and former Psychology teacher at West Point. He was involved in the debriefing following the Columbine shooting and many other recent high profile incidents. His arguments are detailed, well connected, and common-sense based. His basic message is that the increase in television violence can be directly correlated with increases in violence among youth. Also, that video games are effective tools in teaching kids to kill! I won't go into his arguments now but rather throw out this teaser with more to come soon. His book "Teaching Kids to Kill : A Call to Action Against TV, Movie and Video Game Violence" will be available in October but can be pre-ordered now. Click here to order the book or obtain more information. There is also a video of his lecture which is fantastic. I will get more information on how to get it as soon as I can. If you can't wait until I post more, leave me a message on the discussion forum and I'll give you more there.

Being in Control

Added August 11, 1999

The Family Clinic is proud to be a distributor for Jason Alster, author of the book: Being in Control.

While the book is less than 40 pages, it is very readable to children. The quality graphics explain how to control symptoms related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The natural techniques presented in the book include relaxation, imagery, concentrating, memory enhancement and many more. Professionals will enjoy this book and may want to give it to clients or use it as a workbook for group therapy. Click here for more information.

Educational Products

Added August 10, 1999

The Family Clinic in cooperation with Amazon Toys are offering educational products to help children develop their cognitive abilities. What is so neat about our catalogue is that most of the products come with a code that corresponds to SOI factors. SOI stands for the Structure of Intellect and is used in about 200 schools across the nation. SOI is gaining in popularity and is one of the best if not the best method to assess learning disabilities and provide a plan to treat these disabilities.

If you are unfamiliar with SOI, do not worry. Our store is helpful to anyone. Come check us out!
