Favorite Therapy Techniques

Added October 31, 2002

Our kids have plenty of candy again this year. Actually this is the first year that only one child went "trick or treating". The rest consider themselves too old. This will be the first year our seventeen year-old did not go "trick or treating" and this will be the second year for the fifteen year-old.

The staff at Your Family Clinic are trying to make this web site truly your web site. To help accomplish this goal we are making the web site even more interactive. We now offer you the opportunity to post your favorite therapy techniques. Soon we will have a place to put your favorite parenting techniques. This will give an additional forum to share experiences in addition to Your Family Clinic's bulletin board.

Click here to go to Your Favorite Therapy Techniques. The listing is small now, but hopefully it will grow. We need your input!

We hope you enjoy the information from the contributors. Feel free to return often and post the secrets to your success. Happy ghosting um.. posting!

Our newest video!

Added October 28, 2002

I am watching Monday Night Football and it is almost time for Halloween! We have a nice treat for everyone who orders our Temperature Biofeedback Kit. We have added an instructional video at no extra cost! The video comes on a CD and is in MPG format. That means it can be viewed on your computer. Get the thermometer, instructions, the CD, and shipping for only $28.00. Check it out by clicking here. It is easy to learn and can be a great tool for parents and therapists. I use temperature biofeedback several times a day. The technique usually only takes about five minutes and can be used for a variety of purposes. Kids and adults enjoy doing using it. What a treat!

Dr. Mel Levine's Information

Added October 24, 2002

It has been another long stretch since I have written in this column. Shame on me. There has been some exciting new to me things going on. One of them is Dr. Mel Levine's information on Learning Disorders. What a great contribution to the field. His website is soooo good, I am definitely envious. He teaches professionals effective ways of dealing with children who have learning disorders. It is a must read for parents with children with attention deficit disorders and learning disorders. The information is good for everyone because he says that in some ways, everyone has a learning disorder. There is no perfect brain, and there are some things that our brains will not be able to learn.

I know this is true with me when it came to Calculus. It is also true for me with spelling. In college math courses I can make straight A's, but give me a Calculus course, I was lucky to make a low C. If it was not for spell checker, my spelling would be offensive. If you look closely at this website you are bound to find some of my spelling blunders.

Fortunately, we all have strengths. We have things that we do better than most people. Children with learning disorders and ADD often have several strengths that unfortunately often do not get emphasized in school. Instead of feeling good about the things the child can do, too much emphasis is placed on what the child can not do. This needs to change within our school system and within our homes. Dr. Mel Levine's website: www.allkindsofminds.com and book A Mind at a Time helps facilitate this change. Maybe someday I will take another Calculus class, or at the very least just be grateful that I do not have to use Calculus everyday. Maybe I should focus on my strengths more.

No More ADHD

Added August 5, 2002

Tomorrow is my Birthday! For a birthday present, my wife allowed me to go to the Health Food store and pick out what I wanted. I did! I found the best book for treating Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder with out medication.

It is great! I have been searching for an effective treatment for children whose ADHD symptoms appear to be caused by allergies. I think the book No More ADHD is it!

Currently I am having a medical problem that my regular physician said I would have to live with. I did not want to live with it, so now I am seeing a medical doctor who is also a Homeopath and an Acupuncturist. Fortunately I do not need acupuncture treatment, but the homeopathic treatment I am receiving is excellent. As side effects, I have lost 26 lbs. and my seasonal allergies have gone away. I am at my college days weight! What he is teaching me about my body is also presented in this book.

I suspect that many people with mental health problems and also people with health problems have toxic chemicals in their body that is the root cause of these problems. I feel allergies are controlled by having a body free of pollutants and harmful chemicals.

My improvement in health was almost immediate. I had to change my diet and three days later my allergies went away. My problem that I would have to live with for the rest of my life was gone in two months. It may come back, but I will do my best to keep it from coming back.

The book "No More ADHD: Ten Steps to help Improve Your Child's Attention and Behavior without Drugs!" by Dr. Mary Ann Block (ISBN: 09665545-3-1) talks about methods of healing that has helped me. I feel it is definitely worth a try before resorting to medication. It might be helpful. If a child is on medication, it may be worth while to see if Dr Block’s treatment methods are comparable. Dr. Block is a licensed osteopathic physician. Check out the book by clicking here. Let us know what you think of her book! Thanks Monica for the swell birthday gift.

Controling Emotions with EFT

Added July 11, 2002

Life has been busy around here this summer. We were able to take a trip to Destin, Florida during the Fourth of July weekend. It was very crowded, but the fish were pleasant and no jelly fish! Destin has great beaches and they were full of colorful fish. We like feeding the fish frozen peas. They eat right out of your hand. We had a great time!

Gary Craig has a great way to learn EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques. All you have to do is request his CDs. If you like the content, you pay $15.00. If you do not like the content, you send the CDs back. I was so pleased with them that I sent $25.00. They are very much worth it. To order yours, just follow this link: https://www.emofree.com/store/ordervcd.asp

The CDs give a good introduction. We recommend that you follow through with your learning by purchasing the book Energy Tapping by Fred P. Gallo and Harry Vincenzi. The book fills in the details. We have used both and find EFT or Field Thought Therapy very useful. I like it better than EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Both are great for overcoming traumatic memories and dealing with anxiety. EFT seems to be applicable to more situations including compulsions and chemical dependency. Hopefully you will enjoy EFT too.

Understanding Solutions to ADHD

Added May 18, 2002

I was reading the SOI newsletter and there was a person who viewed Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder in the same way I do. It was great! So, I asked her if I could put her article on Your Family Clinic and she said yes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. To view it, just click here.

Developmental Vision Training!

Added February 18, 2002

The American Vision Institute has a free training on Developmental Vision through the Internet. It is great! If you have children or work with children who have learning problems, this internet training is a must. We highly recommend it.

Their web training represents the power of the Internet in presenting information. When you connect to the free training, you will see a video on the left side of the screen, the presenter’s slide presentation on the right side of the screen and on the left bottom of the screen questions from people watching the video when it was live and while moderators were answering their questions. It was truly amazing. I was cutting and pasting and saving like crazy! We only have a slow phone line, yet everything worked well. It did take some time to load. Broadband users should not have to wait.

To view the event, you have to do a few steps. Just go to www.digevent.com/events/visualconnection.html, down page to the bottom and follow their three steps. If you have any questions, or need additional information, please contact their support technicians at techsupport@digevent.com or call 1-800-557-5205, option 2. Again this is great education. After the presentation you should be able to go to any class room and just by observation, pick out three or four children who have obvious near point vision problems. These will be children who may have passed the school’s vision screening test. Please let us know what you think after you have viewed the presentation. Our inexpensive training video teaches you how to conduct a near point vision screening. Check it out by clicking here.

Do Vision Therapy in Your Own Home!

Added January 5, 2002

The leaders of The American Vision Institute wrote a book to help individuals improve their vision. The book is simply wonderful. My goal is to no longer need my glasses in the next month or two. I have myopia. The book explains what myopia is and how to prevent it from getting worse. Other optometry jargon is efficiently explained as well. The book explains that some people are even able to no longer need glasses or contacts. My son has just been diagnosed with myopia and has his first set of glasses. Hopefully he will be able to work his way out of them as well.

The book also has techniques that deal with common near point vision problems such as lazy eye, convergence problems, suppression problems, astigmatism, cross eyes, and cataracts. Combined with appropriate nutrition, it should be a powerful weapon against vision problems.

Today is the first day that I have started the “foundation” exercises. I am typing this without my glasses. I have been wearing glasses since age 16 and it feels funny since I only have taken them off to sleep. It will be nice to not become dependent on them. The book explains that it is a myth that going without your glasses will make your eyes worse. Going without your glasses can help your eyes get better. Before you try going without your glasses, please read the book first. The book is: Improve Your Vision Without Glasses or Contact Lenses by Dr. Steven M. Beresford, Dr. David W. Muris, Dr. Merrill J. Allen, and Dr. Francis A. Young. To order the book, just click on the above title or purchase it from your local bookstore.

Video on Assessing Learning Disorders

Added December 25, 2001

Merry Christmas! We hope your Christmas went well. We had a nice gift from the post office. They delivered my brother’s family Christmas gifts to us on Christmas day. Yesterday, my brother called to tell me it was going to be late. He was wrong. We live in the country and the post office delivered it to our house. They said they knew the box was Christmas presents. I did not know that they worked on Christmas. Our whole family was very pleased.

Anyway, about the video. It is finally finished and ready for distribution! If you are interested in increasing your knowledge about learning disorders, this video is for you. If you are not interested in this subject, then this video is not for you. The video presents our comprehensive model in assessing learning disorders. For more information, click here on this link.

Now you know what we did on Christmas. We opened presents and posted this message. Maybe too many people enjoy their so much that they work on holidays. We did not work too hard. The post office did make our day though. We hope you have a Happy New Year as well!

Put Your Multi-Vitamin to the Test!

Added November 6, 2001

September 11 caused us to mourn and we are still grieving. We feel so sorry for all those who lost loved ones.

Vita-cost sent us some information on Multi-vitamins. We thought it was interesting. We hope you like it. Keeping yourself healthy is very important and a good vitamin supplement can be helpful. We recommend using vitamins in moderation. If you can get a good organic diet, that is probably your best method of healthy living. Otherwise most need to depend on vitamins to ensure their bodies and minds are healthy. Just click here to see this article written by a physician.

Resources for Learning Disorders

Added September 3, 2001

Hope your Labor Day was as good as ours! I ate too much bar-B-Q today even though it rained most of the day.

Your Family Clinic now accepts credit cards and debit cards thanks to Paypal. We have conducted business through personal checks for years now. We hope our customers find it convenient. We have also become affiliates with Vitacost.com which sells nutritional products at discounted prices or wholesale prices. Feel free to check out our nutrition page to connect to their website.

Our greatest accomplishment this month is still in the making. We have listed activities and games that can enhance development of skills from the Structure of Intellect test. We feel that this is one of the best tests for learning disorders. Contact us by E-mail if you need more information than what we offer. The list of activities when finished will have links where you can obtain these resources on the Internet. Some items are free. Some you probably have at home and do not realize how useful they are for intellectual development. Click here to view this page which is now under construction.

Behavioral Interventions for ADD

Added August 11, 2001

It is finally ready! I have been working on this chapter on and off for two years now, but it is finished and uploaded on the internet. The chapter is on Behavioral Interventions for Children with ADD and ADHD symptoms. We hope you like it!

This article is published via the Share Ware principle, where if you like it, please send in the nominal payment. This keeps people like me encouraged to write more and allows you the privilege of using the information any way you wish. If you reproduce the article, just include the Share Ware notice. Click here to view this article.

Some of the techniques described are traditional behavior modification procedures that have been researched and found effective. There are some newer techniques that do not have the research base, but we have found useful and effective in clinical practice. Go ahead and give them a try. They have no known harmful side effects!

Now... it’s on to the chapter on biofeedback techniques or the update of the chapter on nutrition and ADD. Maybe I’ll return to that game of spider.

Where is Dr. Sam Chachoua?

Added July 28, 2001

Hope your summer is going as fine as our summer is! I am still amazed at how good Dr. Amen's book on ADD is (see article below). I will have to update the nutrition article for ADHD treatment.

What's new? It's what isn't new that is the problem with me today

Do you ever have a question that never gets answered and it kind of sticks with you? That is what I feel about cures for cancer. A few months ago we pointed to an article about Dr. Sam Chachoua being awarded ten million dollars in a law suit against Mt. Sinai Hospital in California. Allegedly the hospital kept the truth from the public and tried to discredit Dr. Chachoua's work. Since then we have not heard of any future developments. The latest update that I could find on the Internet is at Minnessota Wellness (http://www.mnwelldir.org/docs/editorial/cancer_cure.htm). If anyone can find any further developments, please let us know. I hope he is alive and well. It sure would be nice to have a cure for cancer. Chemo and radiation are not very efficient. We should be hearing more news about Dr. Sam Chachoua's work on cancer cures.

Healing ADD

Added July 7, 2001

Several people told me about this book... so.... I finally bought the book and they were right... it is great! The name of the book is Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the 6 Types of ADD and the author is Daniel G. Amen, M.D. Dr. Amen did a wonderful job and this book should be very helpful to many children and adults suffering with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Dr. Amen delineates six different types of ADD that can be seen in SPECT scans of the brain. He also discusses which medication and nutritional products work best for each subtype of ADD. He even talks about the best positions to put EEG biofeedback electrodes to help the brain overcome the symptoms of ADD! We are excited about this book and feel you will not be disappointed with it. It offers a holistic approach and has specific recommendations for teachers, parents and individuals with ADHD symptoms. More information about Dr. Amen and SPECT images can be viewed at www.amenclinic.com and www.brainplace.com. Hope you enjoy the book as much as we do.

Accelerated State Conditioning

Added June 29, 2001

Hey, it’s Friday night and the family is watching on of my favorite movies “The Sixth Sense”. There is some great acting in that movie.

Yesterday, I received an E-mail from Neal Engleking, one of our contributors, letting us know that he updated his article on Accelerated State Conditioning. This is a great article for those dealing with Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder. We have a copy of his older version on our website. If you would like to go directly to his website and see the updated copy, just click here.

Lead Poisoing is Harmful to Children

Added June 18, 2001

Hope your summer is going great! It has been a long time since we have updated Your Family Clinic. Needless to say, we have been very busy. Now I have some vacation days and can devote some enjoyable time to the web site.

Our psychiatrist (from the day job) had informed us of new research showing that what used to be considered safe levels of lead, actually are not very safe at all. Click here to get to a link that discusses research results that suggests that even lead levels below 5 ug/dL are associated with lower IQ scores.

As a practicing Psychologist who works with children, I feel that lead levels low and high cause lower IQ, speech deficits and problems with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Unfortunately, we see children with high lead levels move out of a lead contaminated home only to have another family move in. The laws are too relaxed and many people suffer a life time for the neglect of a few landlords.

If your child has been exposed to lead, we recommend that you use a holistic approach to deal with the problem. Nutrition and medical care can be used to get the lead out of the body. Do not be satisfied until all traces of lead are free from the body. Some physicians do not use nutritional approaches to cleans the body of lead and we feel that is inadequate. After the lead is out, cognitive rehabilitation services are needed to raise IQ scores, correct speech deficits, and deal with ADHD symptoms.

All of this takes time and effort, but well worth the trouble considering the life time impact of IQ scores 15 points lower than what they should be. If you need more information concerning overcoming the effects of lead poisoning, feel free to browse this web site and/or contact us via E-mail.

Child Social Phobia

Added February 3, 2001

It is another late night from a busy Saturday. All the people who host Your Family Clinic got together tonight to play cards. The boys barely beat the girls at spades. We got lucky that the girls overbid on the last hand.

We all are lucky because Christine Sheffer, who was not at the card game, donated her presentation on Social Phobia in children to the Web site. She did a great job of putting it together. It is designed for professionals to use if they ever have to give a presentation on Social Phobia.

I am experimenting with Corel Office 2000 (tm), and the project was completed in Corel Presentations. If I understand everything correctly, you can download the project into Corel Presentations. Please give Christine Sheffer the credit if you use it in a presentation. If you want to see it, just click here.

Over the next two weeks, I will be cleaning it up. The internet sure is fun. We hope you enjoy the presentation and other things we have on Your Family Clinic. I think the girls let us win tonight. They probably felt sorry for me since I am such a poor loser.

The Voucher System.

Added January 20, 2001

Neat things are always happening! This news item is from a mother who developed a discipline system to help children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and children who are Oppositional and Defiant. The following text was written by the program's author, Gail Brewster.

The Voucher System Behavior Management Program has proven to be the best most effective system for improving behaviors, building self-esteem, providing structure children need and eliminating many of the power struggles and loopholes found in other forms of behavior management. The Voucher System comes with a complete set of guidelines and parenting tips that ensure parents the best success. In addition, parents are able to expand the process through the Newsletter which provides a vast amount of information for other needs. The Voucher System is a nonaggressive program that meets children right where they are. It holds them accountable for actions while rewarding them for accomplishments. Virtually everything you deal with as a parent can be addressed with The Voucher System: chores, bad mouthing, fighting, badgering, teaching values, outbursts and so on. Kids and parents enjoy the fun and structure of the system. Here's what one mom said: "My 12 year old son, Josh, is ADHD and ODD. We were at the end of our rope with him. He would accept no responsibility, and we fought all the time. Since we began using the system 3 weeks ago, things have turned around 180 degrees." One thing parents and children love about The Voucher System is the way it promotes parent/child interaction. This helps children to internalize what parents are trying to teach them, outgrowing many behaviors as a result. It even works for teens. I have two teen girls, my strong willed Sarah 14, and Christa who has ADD, she's going on 16. It works as well today as it did when we began it seven years ago. Kids respect the way The Voucher System teaches them responsibility, self control and acceptable behavior without demeaning consequences. You can find out more about The Voucher System by visiting our Web Site at http://www.happy-kids.com

If anyone tries this system, please let us know how it works for you. You can let us know by sending an E-mail to yourfam@netdoor.com, or by posting on our bulletin board.

Understanding Brain Waves.

Added January 15, 2001

What did you do on Martin Luther King Day? Our family did some work and I got to play with the computer. I am taking the plunge and trying to build my own computer. By the time I have it built it will probably be obsolete. Oh, well....

Another thing I did today was finish a short article introducing brain waves. This is to help people who are interested in knowing what Alpha, Theta, Delta, etc. mean. If you are one of those people, please feel free to check it out by clicking here. Hope you enjoyed today’s holiday.

Peak Performance is for Everyone!

Added January 6, 2001

We hope everyone had a Happy New Year. We sure did! Today we just made a couple of new changes to the web site. The first of which relates to the EEG biofeedback. We now offer services for Peak Performance. Peak Performance is were you feel your best and you are very mentally alert. Check it out by clicking here.

The second change has been to the Consortium page. We have added links to building photographs of two of the internship sites. We still have to add the photograph of where I work. To see the pictures, go to our here Pre-Doctoral Internship site. By the way, we are enjoying interviewing this years prospective interns. They seem to get better and better each year. Many are interested in EEG biofeedback. Three years ago, it seemed like none of them were interested.

When I think of the success we are having, I am grateful for all our contributors, our customers, and the people that visit our site. Thank you. Last year was a great year. We are looking forward to this year. Happy 2001!
