Dr. Sam Chachoua defeats Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Added December 27, 2000

We hope you all had a very Merry Christmas. My family and I are still enjoying ours. We received many electronics and art supplies so we are happy.

Have you heard? In August, A federal court jury awarded Dr. Sam Chachoua ten million dollars in damages from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Allegedly the hospital staff was involved in a conspiracy to suppress and destroy him in his treatment for Aids and Cancer. This came after he demonstrated that his treatment was 99% effective against Aids.

This is important for us because it illustrates how the “establishment” will go to any lengths to destroy other’s works. We will not speculate the reasons why, but this court case is an example of what many have been claiming for years.

We have witnessed an example of this. When we lived in Utah, a homeopath had a computerized assessment program that told what ailments the body had. We tried it out on our son and then took him to another homeopath that used a different method and both reports were identical. My colleague had a teenage client try the machine and it showed positive for cannabis. The youth had not told his parents that he was smoking pot and the parent was very impressed. Later the FDA came and confiscated the machine saying that it was not an approved medical devise. The machine was not dangerous nor invasive. It appeared accurate to us. I am told that all such machines in the United States have been taken.

At Your Family Clinic, we discourage discord among helping professionals no mater what their discipline. We feel that we all can learn from every healing art profession. Our goal is to create an environment where this knowledge can be available for everyone to use.

It may be true that there are some “quack” treatments that can do more harm that good. We feel they are not as common as most people are lead to believe. Granted that there may be some techniques that are untrue and even harmful, but with time, these techniques and/ or disciplines should diminish on their own given a free market economy and unbias research. Medical practices are constantly changing as they gain more in knowledge through application and research. We would like to see all healing arts do the same.

So check out the news about the $10,000,000.00 in damages at the following link if you are interested in this fascinating true story. I hope they make a movie out of it.

Our new name: Your Family Clinic.

    Added December 23, 2000

We have a new name thanks to Yahoo. The new address is www.yourfamilyclinic.com. The old web site address will fade out within six months. Simplenet was bought by Yahoo and they decided to change Simplenet accounts. We decided to make the best of the change by changing our name to Your Family Clinic. It may take us a while to make all the changes.

Probably the biggest change will be the bulletin board. The bulletin board will allow individuals and families to share information with others. Many of our visitors have given us suggestions and told us about their experiences. We hope to gain from this vast amount of knowledge.

We welcome your comments about the web site. We also encourage you to share which treatments have worked the best for you and your family. We need information concerning successful treatments for adults as well as children. This information will be used to expand the site in an effort to help others. Thus, this is truly Your Family Clinic.

    Managing Stress in the Workplace.

    Added October 31, 2000

Has it been a whole month since we have added anything new? I guess so. Tonight is Halloween and I wanted to post a treat for everyone. Three of our four children went "trick or treating" tonight (the second born, 13 years of age did not want to go) and now have lots of candy. They will be hyper and at each other’s throats until we take the candy away. I do not know why we go through this every year. You would think we would learn, but oh well....

Anyway now for the treat! Dr. Sidne Buelow, Ph.D. wrote an article for us to post on the Internet. She works with us at the community mental health center, is a famous author on chemical dependency, and is a joy to work with. Anyway, she wrote this article entitled Managing Stress in the Workplace. (Just click here to look at it.) I thought she did a great job. It can be used by any working person. It is also a great client handout for professionals to distribute. Let us know what you think about it. If you need to contact Dr. Buelow, just send us an E-mail and we will tell you how to reach her. Happy Halloween!

Treating Autism: Overview of an Holistic Approach.

    Added September 30, 2000

What a week! A lot of neat things are happening. Dr. Amy Holmes presented in our little community on Autism. For extra credit, my students attended her workshop and gave me a copy of her handouts. It was great! I learned so much that I had to share some of the information with everyone. So here it is: Treating Autism: Overview to an Holistic Approach. Her notes are more detailed than this article of course. However the article containes many links for more information. The first link takes you to a place that has information about Dr. Amy Homes, M.D. As for the article, I plan on spicing it up with graphics and adding more information about nutrition, medication, etc. I hope you like it.

Three Tools to Help Ease Night Fears.

    Added September 9, 2000

It has been a while since I found time to write something. I get to teach a new class at the University and it is keeping me busy. But not too busy to let you know about things that help children deal with nightmares, bumps in the night, and other normal childhood fears. Our youngest is just getting over having to have the bathroom light on while she sleeps. I like total darkness, so having no lights on is great for me! Anyway, Mercer Mayer has three great books dedicated to the subject. Reading these books to fearful children may help them deal with their fears. A child with resolved fears is a healthier child in our opinion. And the books are fun to read. If you are interested, click here. Have a good night!

Toys for the Playroom and What They Represent.

    Added July 29, 2000

It's another Saturday and I get to play on the computer. We are pool sitting and we just returned from a splash in the pool. Maybe one day we will get our own pool. In the meantime ..., our Doctoral Intern gave some handouts on play therapy and I thought I would share with everyone. I do not know who wrote the article yet. When I find out, I will put the name on it. We often get requests for places to purchase toys for the sand tray. Maybe some of the catalogs listed in this article will be a good place to find toys. To see the handout, click here. Now lets have some more fun!

    New Videos.

    Added July 15, 2000

We just started making videos! We have the latest equipment, but not the latest skill with the camera. We call these videos "un cut" videos. The quality of the information is high, but we can not say the same for the camera personnel. Thanks to the equipment, the lighting is good and the color is great. We could use some actors. Anyway, the prices are reasonable. Our first two titles are designed for professionals but hopefully anyone can understand the information presented. One video is about diagnosing reading disorders and the second is for those using Lexicor EEG Biofeedback equipment. For more information, click here. Lights, camera, action!

Ethical Issues on Children's Consent for Treatment.

    Added July 15, 2000

It’s a Saturday hot afternoon and my wife just got in from a canoe trip. I have been tending the children and playing with the computer. I finally posted Michelle Boucher’s paper she let us have for the Family Clinic. Was’nt that nice of her? This professional article talks about the ethical concerns when treating children. At what age can they give their consent? To read on, just click here. My wife got tipped over by some bullies!

    More Changes to Site.

    Added July 5, 2000

We are in the process of changing the style of the site so that all the pages match and it is easier to get around. We are about half way there. I hope everyone had a great Independence Day. P.S. The online store is working again (was down for a bit), try it out by clicking the link below featured products.

    Expanded Options for Biofeedback Services!

    Added July 4, 2000

It's our nation's birthday and I get to play on the computer! To offer more choices and to make EEG biofeedback available to more people, we have expanded our services. Check out our new price list! We hope you enjoy the Fourth of July. We will light some fire crackers tonight!

    Errors on page fixed!

    Added June 22, 2000

Hi, you may notice that the page loads much faster than in the past now that many of the errors have been fixed. Also, Dan fixed the dead links on this page as well. Thanks to all those that clued us in to the problem. We welcome your comments and you may post them on the forum.

A great summary of Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

    Added June 5, 2000

A good friend, Tillmon Sheets, wrote this informative primer on Oppositional Defiant Disorder and has given us permission to reprint it here. This article was originally written as a handout to families of ODD kids to give them an understanding of the disorder and course of treatment. I was working on one myself when Till brought this to my attention so I will now direct my attention to a treatment guide. I hope you enjoy this. P.S. Please remember this is copyrighted material. Request for reprints can be made by email to the family clinic.

    Parenting In Difficult Situations

    Added May 13, 2000

It's late and I am tired, but I think I can upload a rough draft. Next week I will make it easier to use. Until then, please feel free to enjoy my latest publication. I gave a presentation on this last week. I participated in National Mental Health Month. Anyway, click here to view Parenting in Difficult Situations.

    Hypnosis Used in Surgery

    Added April 29, 2000

This information was posted on the Internet on April 28, 2000. I think it shows what we knew for a long time that self-hypnosis is a very useful tool. Described below is just one useful application of hypnosis.

LONDON (AP) -- Trance states have been used for hundreds of years by both witch doctors and modern-day surgeons to help sick people. But not much scientific evidence has existed that hypnosis really works to reduce pain during surgery.

Scientists report in this week's issue of The Lancet medical journal that among people undergoing surgery that did not involve a general anesthetic, those who were hypnotized needed less pain medication, left the operating room sooner and had more stable vital signs than those not in a hypnotic state.

"Despite how long hypnosis as been around and the dramatic effects it has shown, there are very few properly designed clinical studies that demonstrate that it is more than a placebo," said David R. Patterson, professor of rehabilitation medicine, surgery and psychology at the University of Washington in Seattle, who was not connected with the study.

"This really solidifies the evidence," he said. "For acute pain ... it's not arguable any more."

The study, led by Dr. Elvira Lang of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, involved 241 people of similar health and age who had operations to open clogged arteries and veins, relieve blockages in the kidney drainage system or block blood vessels feeding tumors.

The patients were divided into three groups -- one that experienced normal interactions with doctors and nurses, another that had extra attention from an additional person in the operating room who made sure nobody said anything negative, and a third whose members were helped to hypnotize themselves.

All the patients were able to give themselves as much pain medication as they wanted through an intravenous tube.

The hypnosis group -- who were guided through visualizations of scenarios they found pleasant -- fared best, but the patients receiving extra attention also benefited.

About half the patients in the two groups needed no drugs at all, while the rest gave themselves only half the amount of medication as those undergoing the operation with no special attention.

The hypnotized patients were the only ones who said the pain did not get worse as the surgery progressed and the only group who had fewer problems with their blood pressure and heart rate during the operation.

Their operations also finished 17 minutes earlier than those conducted without the patients receiving special attention.

Lang suggested that time was saved in these operations because the surgeon's attention was diverted less often by events such as the patient being oversedated, unstable blood pressure or vomiting.

"A lot of people have talked about it, but no one's going to take hypnosis seriously in this arena unless it's shown to work," said Michael Nash, editor of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. "This is a breakthrough study that moves beyond were anecdote and actually demonstrates not only a benefit but also a cost saving."

Dr. Marie-Elisabeth Faymonville, an anesthesiologist at the University of Liege in Belgium who has conducted similar research, said she did not consider the new research landmark. But she added that as the largest study to date on the issue, it provides important confirmation of the benefit of hypnosis in surgery.

The study was funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

If you would like to know more about self-hypnosis, please contact The Family Clinic and we will point you in the right direction.

    Time-out Hand-out

    Added April 29, 2000

Life has been busy for us at the Family Clinic. There was some spare time that I finally uploaded a new article. Actually it is not a new article, but an article I have been using for years. I owe this article to Dr. Randy Hyde from the Preferred Family Clinic in Provo, Utah. That is were I completed my Post Doc. Dr. Hyde had a similar handout that I revised into this article. Dr. Hyde has copyright on his article. I think this article differs enough from his article that I am not infringing on what he has done. I hope so anyway.

If you are a professional, please feel free to modify this short article any way you want. I did not make a copyright for it. We hope you enjoy this little hand-out. Click here to go to the time-out hand-out.

    Brain Boosting Foods

    Added March 11, 2000

    Challenging FreeCell Games

    Added March 4, 2000

At our house, we play FreeCell by Microsoft, Inc. all the time. I really love it. FreeCell may not be just a waste of time. It may improve problem solving skills.

Let me explain. The Structure of Intellect (SOI) Model measures 26 abilities related to intelligence and functioning well in school. Problem solving skills are used in math and advanced math. While FreeCell does not involve math, it does include convergent abilities or problem solving skills. The SOI states that doing activities that are related to a certain weakness, will build or strengthen that area of weakness. In other words, those who score low on convergent abilities should benefit by playing FreeCell.

We have put together a list of the more difficult FreeCell games. If you are not good at playing FreeCell, then you would want to use easier games. If you are looking for challenging games, then our list is great! To get to the list, click on the Learning Disorders section and follow the link to our FreeCell page. For more information on the SOI, use the same section and follow the link to our SOI page.

    New Natural Supplement for ADHD!

    Added February 12, 2000

I just got back from a Conference on Neuro-feedback in Palm Springs, California. It was a great conference. While attending the sessions, I met a Psychiatrist who also prescribes natural products. I asked her what she recommended for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. She suggested a product from Tyler Inc. called Neuro-Plus. Here is the information from the Tyler website on the product:

Neuro-Plus provides comprehensive botanical and nutritional support for central nervous system function. Aging, stress, environmental exposures and a variety of other factors may have adverse influences on mental function. Neuro-Plus contains standardized botanicals and DMAE, shown to support cognitive abilities, learning capacity and mental responses to stress.

If any of you have tried this product, please let us know what you think. Tyler only sells to licensed professionals so you may need a friend or professional to order it. For more information about Tyler Inc. just follow this link.

    News from the Web!

    Added January 27, 2000

I just finished adding the new web news generator between baby crying. It offers up to date news from many areas of mental health including depression, ADHD, eating disorder, pharmacology and more. Click here to check it out. Best wishes to all our readers since this is my first post of the new millennium. I am currently working on an article on Oppositional Defiant Disorder. It is a multi-part article that starts with a basic description of the Disorder. I am writing it because ODD is often misdiagnosed and there are few effective treatment approaches. Keep a look out, I will be finished with the first part any day now.

Six Ways to Help a Brain Heal.

New Price on our Balance Board of only $45.00 including shipping!

    Added January 15, 2000

Happy New Year, New Century, and New Millennium! To start the new time right we decided to lower the price on our balance board. Actually we found a new builder and are passing the savings to our customers.

Balance boards are useful in helping the brain correct neurological deficits. When working with near point vision problems and other learning disorders, it is helpful to encourage the brain to develop in a balance manner (e.g., both sides of the brain growing at the same time). Theoretically, completing remediation exercises on a balance board will help the individual reach their goals quicker. The brain functions best when it is in balance.

Several research studies have been conducted on the balance board. To date, these articles have mixed results. All the articles that we reviewed showed at least some positive gains in using a balance board. However, many of the articles reported that the balance board did not produce all of the desired results that were expected in the study.

Most practitioners of Structure of Intellect (SOI) and near point vision therapists do not use the balance board by itself. Rather, they combine the balance board with other exercises. This is our recommendation. While playing on the balance board is helpful in certain situations, it is not likely to do as much as you would want by itself. Reading problems are often difficult to resolve and requires additional treatment strategies. While playing on the balance board will improve everyone's reading ability, to have lasting benefits, we recommend combining the balance board with other remediation exercises. Using the balance board with other exercise should achieve the desired results.

Balance boards are also used to produce clear thinking. Executives, professionals, and students often report that they think better after doing 10 to 20 minutes of exercises on the balance board. When we have students who refuse to do psychological testing, we allow them to play on the balance board. Usually they are then willing to complete the testing.

For more information on our balance boards, click here. Please let us know if you have additional questions. If you order one, we hope you will enjoy using the balance board as much as we do.

Brief Solution Focus Therapy in Schools

    Added January 15, 2000

As I prepare to give a presentation on Brief Therapy in Schools, Dr. Miller's Internet newsletter came to my rescue! One of the articles was on Brief Solution Orientated therapy for schools. So I will pass on the good news to those who may be interested:

What do you think? We want to know. If you have comments about our site, please let us know by contacting us via E-mail.
