Our guest speaker for this month’s Autism Spectrum Disorder Parent Support Group was Ms. B. Laurie Ryba MSN, FNP-BC who is a Nurse Practitioner. She practices Integrative Care and is about the only one that accepts insurance. She does not accept Medicaid, but she does accept Medicare. Her private practice is Enhanced Wellness of Oak Grove, PLLC and is located at 5698 Place Blvd, Hattiesburg, MS 39402. Her office phone number is: 601-264-7286.

Ms. Ryba introduced us to MTHFR which is an abbreviation for a gene sequence that is believed to be related to the inability for the body to eliminate toxins from the body. The body over time collects toxins. Sources of toxins in the body include pesticides on the food we eat, air pollution from the air we breath, etc. Some of these toxins may even be from medications. The MTHRF gene sequence can give clues to the body’s inability to detoxify. It is related to the genes that allows the body to detoxify.

There are two copies of the gene 677 and 1298 that is believed to be important in determining if someone is likely to have problems with detoxifying. Defective genes can cause blockages in the detox pathways. One to four of these 677 and 1298 gene pairs can be broken. It may signify that the body has problems methylating or detoxifying. If one of these genes are bad then the body can have up to 40% decrease in its ability to detoxify toxic waste within the body. If two are bad then it could mean a 90% decrease to be able to detoxify. 677 are believed to be linked to cardiac problems while 1298 gene is believed to be associated with psychiatric disorders.

It is believed that 80% of the people with autism have dyspolymorephism or this genetic defect in the MTHFR gene sequence. When children are born and placed in the ICU, they are given lots of medications. Some of these babies are not able to get rid of those medication and toxins can build up.

The clinic's website is bellevuesec.com. When the web site opens up, you can click on the banner for a free vision screening to see if you or your child is likely to benefit from the services of a Functional Optometrist.

Normal gut flora and pro-biotics also help in the detoxification system. Children who are born cesarean births do not pick up the healthy bacteria going through the birth canal and can be deficient in the healthy bacteria. This lack of healthy bacteria and make detoxification difficult and can allow toxins to accumulate in the body.

One common scenario, that Ms. Ryba sees in her practice are health children growing up to have some problems with depression and anxiety in their teenage years. They slowly become worse over time and when they are in their later years of life, they have a serious mental illness. They are unable to deal with stress. When Ms. Ryba is able to get the detoxification system working again, their mental health issues improve as well.

Some children with Autism have problems with the MTHFR gene sequence and are unable to detox the toxins in the MMR vaccine and other vaccines. That is why so many of them appeared normal at birth and then after the MMR vaccine developed Autism. These are called vaccine injuries.

You can check the status of the MTHFR gene sequence through services offered by general genetic reports such as 23andMe and Strategene offer such reports. These tests can cost about $250.00 and can tell you if you do have problems with MTHFR gene sequence as well as other information concerning your personal health. Look for sales around the holidays, so it can be less expensive.

If you or a family member has problems with the MTHFR genes then vitamin supplements can help. Children and adults with these problems can have trouble with methylation on the creb cycle which will produce a lack of energy. Methyl B vitamins can help the body detoxify.

Ms. Ryba has noticed that these problems tend to run through the generations of the family. Children often have similar but more intense problems as their parents had. When intervening to help things better it is often best to work with the entire family.

When women have multiple miscarriage, or having babies with heart defects, it can be attributed to problems with the MTHFR gene sequence.

Eating organic, proper food, no gluten, good environment, the right supplements will lessen the toxic load and help the body to detoxify itself.

There are people who specialize in issues related to the MTHFR gene sequence. A genetic specialist has to do this. Some genetic specialists only talk to people on the telephone. They do phone consultations.

Diet and antibiotics can kill off the good bacteria in our intestinal tract. When too many are killed off, we start having problems. The neurotransmitter believed to be tied into depression is serotonin. 98% of serotonin for the brain is produced in your intestinal tract. That is why it is so important to have healthy bacteria in the intestinal tract. Probiotics are very important.

Ms. Ryba recommends a dietary supplement by Ortho Molecular Products called Pro-Biotic 225 which comes in packets so they are easily added to a smoothie, etc. She also recommends that when you or your family member needs to be on an antibiotic, then increase the pro-biotics when the antibiotic is completed. The Pro-Biotic 225 is relatively expensive costing 60 to 70 dollars. However, a little bit each day one package will last two weeks and there are 15 packets in a box. So if you use it that way, it is not that expensive.

How do you know if there is a problem with your intestinal tract? If you have depression, anxiety, or adrenal problems, then you are likely to have problems with your intestinal tract. You do not have the chemicals you need to keep your brain functioning well.

It is a good practice not to take an antibiotic for a common cold. Let your body handle the common cold. If you have green stuff coming out your nose and you have a fever, then it is recommended that you take an antibiotic. However, if you are getting better with those symptoms then you do not need an antibiotic.

Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins to take. It is not really a vitamin but is a pro-hormone. The body makes Vitamin D from exposure to the sun. Vitamin D can stop cancer from growing.

Modern life inhibits us from getting enough sun exposure. Fortunately they have gummy vitamin D3. You need 5 to 10,000 IU per day. Most people are vitamin D deficient.

Vitamin C is another important vitamin. It is only bio-available for 20 seconds after you ingest it. You should take Vitamin C three or four times a day so that it gets into the cell walls. Liposomal Vitamin C does a better job of getting into your cells. Many people use Emergen-C which is fine, but it is only available to the body for 20 seconds. When you have a cold, it is good to take Vitamin C and keep taking it until the virus runs it’s course.

Linda Avery is another Nurse Practitioner in the area that does integrative medicine.

Ms. Ryba also talked about high levels of homocysteine. Any number over 8 is considered High homocysteine. It can be related to polymorphism of the 1298 gene sequence of MTHRF. It is recommended that those with high levels of homocysteine take a vitamin formula for homocysteine that contains methylcobalamin as the B12 and N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC). She recommended that 600 mg of NAC to be taken once a day.

Another good supplement for depression is Omega 3 fatty acids. Usually 6,000 mg per day of Omega 3 fatty acids is a good dosage for someone suffering from depression.

There are places to get more information. Mark Hyman has written several books and helped produce the series “The Broken Brain.” He is involved with the Broken Brain Podscasts as well.

Other topics discussed in this support meeting included how different vegetables handle pesticides differently. Strawberries for example is a pesticide sponge. If you eat strawberries, try to get them organically grown. Avocados on the other hand have a thick peel so it is not worth paying the extra cost for organic Avocados. However, with non organic avocados, when you cut the avocado peel it first and then cut it up. Cutting through the skin with a knife into the avocado can contaminate the inside flesh with pesticides.

The Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org) is a great resource for learning about environmental toxins and how to avoid them. It is another good asset.

There is a list of the dirty dozen. These are fruits and vegetables that it is best to buy organic grown.

We thank everyone that participated in this Support Group meeting. We are sorry that we were unable to record the group meeting. Thank you Ms. Laurie Ryba for your services, insight and expertise.
