5.6 million children experience allergic reactions in the U.S. each year, and most of these are caused by common household objects. This can cause discomfort for your child, including wheezing, sneezing, and itching. Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do as a parent to clean the inside air of allergens in your home. The key is keeping regular habits and learning about the causes of certain allergic reactions. You can then make the necessary changes to keep the whole family safe from common allergy symptoms at home.

Switch Toxic Products for Natural Alternatives

You may be surprised to learn how many items in your home contribute to indoor air pollution. These common, everyday products release toxins that can cause mild to severe allergic reactions. For example, certain cleaners should be abandoned, as should cans of deodorant and pesticides.

Of course, removing these products may not be entirely practical for your family. However, you can search for natural alternatives that don't contain any toxic products or chemicals. These are increasingly common in the stores and can also be easily found online. They are not expensive and will ensure that your indoor air stays clean. Alternatively, you can learn to make your own cleaners and deodorants out of natural products like vinegar, lemon, and baking powder.

Use a High Quality Vacuum Cleaner

It is impossible to prevent a buildup of dust and, over time, this will remain stuck in your home, potentially irritating the lungs and throats of inhabitants. The only effective way of removing dust is by vacuuming the house at least once a week. However, older models of vacuum cleaners can cause more problems than they solve, by allowing dust to escape.

Therefore, it is essential that you head to the store and get the newest and highest quality brand of vacuum cleaner you can find. Think of this like an investment in your own family's health and happiness. A good machine will last many years, making it well worth your money for the sake of a dust free home environment.

Create Pet-Free Zones

One of the other top causes of allergies are pets. They leave fur all over the place, which cannot be removed even by the most powerful vacuum. Therefore, you need to put boundaries on where the cat or dog is allowed to go. Making sure your pets stay off of furniture like beds and couches should be the minimum. You should restrict the pet to downstairs only, ideally out of carpeted rooms and just in the kitchen or utility room. This keeps their fur in one place where it can be easily cleared out and protects the rest of the house. If there is a door leading to the outside, leave it open as much as possible to allow the allergens to escape.

Keeping your children free from allergies allows them to have a fun and happy childhood. By removing toxic products in favour of natural alternatives, regularly vacuuming, and creating pet free zones, you are lowering the amount of allergens. This ensures a clean and happy household.
