Some children have reoccurring inner ear infections. Some of these are treated with tubes to relieve the pain caused by a build up of fluid in the inner ear. This is a relatively evasive procedure that can often be prevented. The goal of this article is to help prevent an operation and to stop reoccurring inner ear infections.

There are inner and outer ear infections. Outer ear infections occurs when an infection is in the external auditory canal. Swimmer’s ear is an example. Simmers ear can usually be treated with over the counter remedies. Other types of outer ear infections can be treated with hydrogen peroxide and then rinsed. Our favorite remedy for outer ear infections and to prevent outer ear infections is herbal ear drops.

These remedies are not recommended if the infection is on the other side of the ear drum (i.e., inner ear infection). If it is severe, it needs to be addressed by medical doctors. However, reoccurring ear infections can usually be eliminated in the following ways:

  • Take your child to a Functional Medical Doctor. Functional Medical Doctors are now in most cities across the United States. They use medicine but for short term use. Their goal is to identify what is causing the ear infections and then addressing that. Tubes only drain the fluid out of the inner ear. They do not treat the cause of the reoccurring ear infections.

  • If you do not have access to a functional medical doctor, then you may have success with the following:

    • drain the fluid in the inner ear with massage. Here are two video links that explain how to do it. One is from a healthcare professional and the other is from a chiropractor.

    • Address the probable cause. For example, if your child was sensitive to milk as an infant in that you had to change formulas due to stomach issues, then milk sensitivity is the likely cause of the recurring ear infections. Keep your child off of all milk products for two weeks or longer and you should see the inflammation and the ear infections go away. You will need to read food labels to insure that your child is not accidentally consuming milk products.

There are so many milk substitutes that it is usually not hard to keep a child off of dairy. Many companies exist to give good tasting alternatives to milk products. After two weeks and if the ear infections have vanished, you may wish to experiment by trying a lactose free milk or goat milk to see if your child can tolerate some aspects of milk. If the ear infections return, you know that lactose free milk or goat milk was not a product that will prevent ear infections in your child. Go back to totally dairy free products.

Some children are sensitive to more than just milk, it may be that their bodies are sensitive to other foods. If the ear infections do not go away after two weeks without milk products, then it is likely that there are other foods that are causing the inflammation in the inner ear.

    • use the Carroll Food Intolerance Evaluation to determine what other foods may be causing the reoccurring ear infections. The Carroll Food Intolerance Evaluation tells you what foods not to combine and what not to eat. It can also tell you about cell salt. Such knowledge can help in the detox process involving your lymphatic system. Currel Food assessment will never change (unless you get a blood transfusion) and only costs $175.00. It involves a finger prick and they usually have the results within a couple of weeks. The test will tell you what should never eat, what food you should never mix, and the salts that will help heal the body. This test is usually available to Nutritionist (sometimes working at or near a Health Food Store) and/or Functional Medical Doctors. Another resource is the Intolerance Lab.

Having tubes in the ears is not a fun procedure. Again, tubes in the ears do not address the underlying problem. They only treat a symptom. By looking for the underlying problem and addressing it, can you truly prevent tubes in the ears. Two techniques mentioned above involve using massage to drain the fluid out of the inner ear, identifying foods that the body is intolerant to and abstaining from them. This will help avoid the need for tubes to be placed in your child's ears. Not having chronic ear infections will also help your child be much happier.
