Many people consider skincare to be a fundamental daily routine, but it also provides a valuable opportunity to bond with your loved ones, thus making it great for mental health as well as physical wellbeing. For parents, this can mean sharing a skincare routine with your children, which not only allows you to teach them the ins and outs of taking care of their skin, but also allows you to spend quality time with them while teaching them important self-care skills. While many skincare routines have a value in promoting good health, more esthetic routines can also be shared with children to ensure they approach their self-care safely in the future. From the importance of regular washing for good hygiene to shaving safely, there are a number of ways to do just that.

The value of teaching the basics

For parents looking to set a good example for their children through everyday skincare, there are several basic fundamentals to begin with. Daily face washing, for instance, is a great place to start. Experts recommend washing the face twice a day (once in the morning and once at night), so beginning and ending your day with washing your face and encouraging your children to do the same alongside you is a great way to start getting them into a routine, regardless as to how old they may be. In addition to face washing, it’s important to teach your children the importance of other skincare basics as well during a daily routine. This includes regular moisturization and using a quality sunblock when outside, both of which are beneficial to the skin.

In establishing a routine with your children, you can instill the value and importance of self-care into their daily lives while teaching them how to maintain clean, moisturized, and protected skin at the same time. Special skincare activities can also be great for building a stronger bond with your children, and can easily be done by using facial mask treatments together regularly. For an all-natural spa night idea, making your own face masks (with ingredients like avocados, honey or aloe vera) makes for a great way to spend a night in together, and can aid in creating a special parent-child skincare tradition.

Hair removal is a teachable moment, too

While it has no relation to health and hygiene, hair removal is a practice that many people incorporate into their daily routines. Ensuring that children know how to do this safely once they are older is another way to bond through skincare. It’s imperative to teach the do’s and don’ts of proper hair removal in order to protect the skin, which can be achieved by setting a good example with your own shaving routine. For example, by shaving with shaving cream and explaining to your kids why you do so, you can ensure that your son or daughter avoids issues like razor burn when they pick up a razor themselves. Similarly, stressing the importance of shaving carefully with a new razor can prevent them from unwanted nicks.

It’s also important to educate your son or daughter on the boundaries of hair removal, such as the dangers involved with unnecessary practices like waxing nose hairs: nose hairs serve as a protective barrier that ensure we’re not taking in harmful particles when we breathe, and waxing them can lead to health complications. Such teachable moments that come along with hair removal can make for the perfect opportunity to teach your child a lifelong skill and knowledge that they’ll carry with them the rest of their life, all the while teaching them how to do things properly to avoid and encountering issues like razor burn along the way.

For parents looking to spend more quality time with their children, sharing a skincare routine and teaching them the basics is a fantastic way to do so. However, not only can it be a great bonding activity, but it’s also a great opportunity for teaching them self-care skills that they’ll carry with them throughout their life.
